Molecular and Cellular Biology of Helminth Parasites Conference registration deadline
(Bratsera Hotel, Hydra, Greece, from
Feb 29, 2012 11:10 AM to
Feb 29, 2012 11:10 PM)
- Helminth parasitology has proven to be one of the fastest growing research areas across a spectrum of scientific activities from genomics, immunology and tropical medicine. With rapidly increasing sequence information, new drug development for therapy, and intricate host-parasite molecular interactions, research on these organisms and the diseases they cause is becoming ever more exciting and relevant to global health. A key element in the success of helminth research has been the collaborative and interactive community of investigators working in this field. Conferences on the Molecular and Cellular Biology of Helminth Parasites have been an integral part of the rapid development of this whole field. The conference series started with the first two meetings in Edinburgh in 1997 and 1999, and moved to the island of Hydra, Greece in 2002. Subsequent conferences have been held in Hydra in 2005, 2008 and 2010. All major areas of helminth research are included, in 12 thematic sessions. An important aspect of this meeting, is the interface between parasite biologists and investigators from worm model systems such as C. elegans, which is proving highly effective at bringing new blood and fresh perspectives into the field. The Conferences offer a special atmosphere of concentrated science, interactive discussions and generous opportunities for informal follow-ups.

AMERICAN SOCIETY OF PARASITOLOGISTS, 87TH ANNUAL MEETING
(Richmond, Virginia, from
Jul 12, 2012 01:05 PM to
Jul 17, 2012 01:05 PM)
- What is the American Society of Parasitologists? The American Society of Parasitologists (ASP) is a diverse group of over 1500 scientists from industry, government, and academia who are interested in the study and teaching of Parasitology. Founded in 1924, ASP members have contributed not only to the development of parasitology as a discipline, but also to primary research in systematics, medicine, molecular biology, immunology, physiology, ecology, biochemistry, behavior, and more. Membership Benefits Costs of publication for the first three pages of each article published in The Journal of Parasitology are waived for everyone. Additional page charges are reduced for members and this savings alone can be more than membership dues. For example, the cost of publishing a 6 page paper: Non-member: 3 free pages + $75/page = 3 X $75 = $225 Member: 3 free pages + $45/page = 3 X $45 = $135 2011 membership dues are $85. Membership includes print and on-line copies of the JP + membership page costs of $135 = $210. As an ASP member, you would save $15 in publishing the article, plus receive member-ship benefits. Members receive the Journal and discounts on new publications and services of interest to parasitologists. In addition to national and international meetings, the local societies are very active in organizing meetings and activities. Students will receive reduced annual membership rates of $20.00 on-line copy only; $35.00 print copy only; or $50.00 on-line and print copy. Students are eligible for travel grants, research grants and awards for presentations given at the meetings. In addition, members enjoy the scientific stimulation and cordiality of fellow scientists from diverse backgrounds and disciplines. Publications The Journal of Parasitology is published bimonthly and includes research articles, brief research notes, announcements of the Society, and book reviews. Articles are subdivided by topic for ease of reference and range from behavior to pathogenesis to systematics. Contributors enjoy rapid turn-around time and broad exposure as over 1400 libraries world-wide subscribe to the Journal. The Journal is recognized for publishing papers that have a long-term impact on the field of Parasitology. The ASP Newsletter is fully electronic, and is published 4 times each year as a pdf file. The newsletter keeps members informed about political initiatives concerning biology, related meetings, employment opportunities, and all things parasitological. Institutional Subscriptions to the Journal of Parasitology for 2011. Rates are: $412.00 U.S. Print & Online; $444.00 Outside U.S. Print & Online; $388.00 Worldwide Online only. Interactions The society encourages members to interact locally through one of the 9 regional societies. Each association or society conducts its own annual meeting and the informal environment is perfect for a student's first presentation. Students The ASP has a strong commitment to students. Student travel grants allow students to attend national meetings and present the results of their research. Student papers are grouped together for presentation and awards are given for the best student presentations. At each annual meeting a workshop is organized by students to discuss topics such as grant-writing, teaching, and job-hunting. Science and Public Policy The ASP is actively involved in public policy issues important to Biology and our Environment. Issues include conservation of biological diversity, the use of animals in laboratory research, and clinical laboratory standards. As a member of the American Institute of Biological Sciences, the membership of the ASP can keep abreast of political initiatives that are important to biologists and inhabitants of the earth. Public outreach is an important part of the ASP, members have in the past and are encouraged to continue to participate in public forums in both local and international arenas. The Education Committee is actively involved in developing an ASP speakers bureau, designed to provide information on parasitology to schools and communities both locally and nationally.
