SUMMARY:AMERICAN SOCIETY OF PARASITOLOGISTS\, 87TH ANNUAL MEETING
DESCRIPTION:What is the American Society of Parasitologists?\n\nThe Am
erican Society of Parasitologists (ASP) is a diverse group of over 150
0 scientists from industry\, government\, and academia who are interes
ted in the study and teaching of Parasitology. Founded in 1924\, ASP m
embers have contributed not only to the development of parasitology as
a discipline\, but also to primary research in systematics\, medicine
 \, molecular biology\, immunology\, physiology\, ecology\, biochemistr
 y\, behavior\, and more.\n\nMembership Benefits\n\nCosts of publicatio
n for the first three pages of each article published in The Journal o
f Parasitology are waived for everyone. Additional page charges are re
duced for members and this savings alone can be more than membership d
ues. For example\, the cost of publishing a 6 page paper\:\nNon-member
 \: 3 free pages + $75/page = 3 X $75 = $225\nMember\: 3 free pages + $
 45/page = 3 X $45 = $135\n\n2011 membership dues are $85. Membership
includes print and on-line copies of the JP + membership page costs of
$135 = $210. As an ASP member\, you would save $15 in publishing the
article\, plus receive member-ship benefits. Members receive the Journ
al and discounts on new publications and services of interest to paras
itologists. In addition to national and international meetings\, the l
ocal societies are very active in organizing meetings and activities.\
n\nStudents will receive reduced annual membership rates of $20.00 on-
 line copy only\; $35.00 print copy only\; or $50.00 on-line and print
copy. Students are eligible for travel grants\, research grants and aw
ards for presentations given at the meetings. In addition\, members en
joy the scientific stimulation and cordiality of fellow scientists fro
m diverse backgrounds and disciplines.\n\n\nPublications\n\nThe Journa
l of Parasitology is published bimonthly and includes research article
s\, brief research notes\, announcements of the Society\, and book rev
iews. Articles are subdivided by topic for ease of reference and range
from behavior to pathogenesis to systematics. Contributors enjoy rapi
d turn-around time and broad exposure as over 1400 libraries world-wid
e subscribe to the Journal. The Journal is recognized for publishing p
apers that have a long-term impact on the field of Parasitology. The A
SP Newsletter is fully electronic\, and is published 4 times each year
as a pdf file. The newsletter keeps members informed about political
initiatives concerning biology\, related meetings\, employment opportu
nities\, and all things parasitological.\n\nInstitutional Subscription
 s to the Journal of Parasitology for 2011. \nRates are\: $412.00 U.S.
 Print & Online\; $444.00 Outside U.S. Print & Online\; $388.00 Worldw
ide Online only.\n\nInteractions\n\nThe society encourages members to
interact locally through one of the 9 regional societies. Each associa
tion or society conducts its own annual meeting and the informal envir
onment is perfect for a student's first presentation.\n\nStudents\n\nT
he ASP has a strong commitment to students. Student travel grants allo
w students to attend national meetings and present the results of thei
r research. Student papers are grouped together for presentation and a
wards are given for the best student presentations. At each annual mee
ting a workshop is organized by students to discuss topics such as gra
 nt-writing\, teaching\, and job-hunting.\n\nScience and Public Policy\
n\nThe ASP is actively involved in public policy issues important to B
iology and our Environment. Issues include conservation of biological
diversity\, the use of animals in laboratory research\, and clinical l
aboratory standards. As a member of the American Institute of Biologic
al Sciences\, the membership of the ASP can keep abreast of political
initiatives that are important to biologists and inhabitants of the ea
rth. Public outreach is an important part of the ASP\, members have in
the past and are encouraged to continue to participate in public foru
ms in both local and international arenas. The Education Committee is
actively involved in developing an ASP speakers bureau\, designed to p
rovide information on parasitology to schools and communities both loc
 ally and nationally.
