Postdoctoral Fellowship-Parasitology Division, New England BioLabs
Postdoctoral Fellowship – Parasitology Division- Job Code 1042BS
The Molecular Parasitology Division invites applications for the
position of postdoctoral fellow. The project will be part of a basic
research program into the molecular basis of symbiosis between the human
filarial parasite Brugia malayi and its obligate endosymbiont,
Wolbachia. Research will be undertaken in a highly collaborative and
academic environment where publication of results is expected.
Project description and responsibilities:
The Wolbachia endosymbiont of Brugia malayi is required for filarial
nematode development and is the target of anti-filarial parasite drug
discovery (1). The genome has been sequenced and annotated, as has the
host nematode genome (2,3). We are concentrating on anti-Wolbachia and
anti-Brugia drug discovery and, among other genomic-based projects, the
lab has focused on the heme biosynthesis pathway (4). This position will
serve to further investigate the biology of symbiosis, using genomic,
biochemical and cytological approaches, including analysis of heme
uptake and synthesis in B. malayi (which contain heme-producing
Wolbachia) and in A. viteae (a related filarial parasite which does not
contain Wolbachia).

Qualifications:
• Ph.D. in a molecular biology/ biochemistry or related field.
• Experience with gene cloning, current DNA sequencing and similar
standard molecular biology techniques.
• Be a creative, independent and productive scientist, able to work
independently and cooperatively as part of a team.
• Demonstrated record of research accomplishments and publications of
original scientific work in high-quality journals.
• Excellent written and verbal skills, clear communication in both
formal and informal settings.
This position offers exciting opportunities for broad research training,
collaboration with academic institutions, publishing in peer-reviewed
journals and participation in national and international conferences.
